Teldio Service Advisory: GPS Week Number Rollover (GWNR)
Restoring GPS location reporting in TruFleet for legacy MOTOTRBO radios
Issued: June 2026 | Ref: TELDIO-SA-2026-01 | Applies to: TruFleet / MOTOTRBO GPS
Summary
A GPS Week Number Rollover (GWNR) event is affecting GPS reporting on older MOTOTRBO radios across the industry. On affected systems, these radios appear in Teldio TruFleet to have stopped reporting, even though they are still transmitting. Teldio has a workaround available today that restores correct, current-dated location reporting, and Motorola is releasing a permanent firmware fix expected in July 2026. This advisory explains how to recognize the issue and the options for resolving it.
Are your radios affected?
The most common sign is simple: affected radios appear to have gone silent in Teldio TruFleet. Before assuming a unit is offline or has a hardware fault, it is worth checking for the pattern below.
| What you see in TruFleet | What is actually happening |
|---|---|
| Vehicles or radios stop updating and drop off the live map, with no recent GPS activity — as though the units were switched off or out of coverage. | The radios are still transmitting. Their GPS is reporting a date roughly 19 years and 8 months (1,024 weeks) in the past, so TruFleet treats each update as outdated and does not display it. The position itself is still accurate — only the timestamp is wrong. |
You may be experiencing GWNR if all of the following apply:
- Only location stopped. Voice and other data still work normally — it is specifically GPS / location reporting that went quiet.
- It began in mid-April 2026. The units were reporting normally until on or around the weekend of 11–12 April 2026. A fleet may drop off gradually as individual radios reach the rollover point rather than all at once.
- Newer radios are unaffected. Other, newer radios on the same system continue to report without issue.
*For the full list of affected currently shipping and discontinued products, refer to Appendix A.
What is causing it
GPS satellites broadcast the date using a week-number counter that resets every 1,024 weeks — roughly every 19.6 years. The legacy NL5500 GPS chipset used in older, non-E / non-refresh MOTOTRBO radios does not account for this reset, so after the rollover it reports a date about 19.6 years in the past. Motorola has confirmed this behaviour in Technical Notification MTN-0098-26. It is a limitation of the radio’s GPS hardware — not a fault in TruFleet, the Teldio server, or your network.
The Teldio workaround (available now)
Teldio has a workaround that restores correct, current-dated reporting so affected units reappear and track normally in TruFleet. The approach depends on how each radio reports its location:
- Standard (Regular GPS) reporting. The TruFleet server automatically corrects the date — applying the current date while preserving the reported time — so these units are restored once identified, with no radio re-programming required.
- Sprite location (indoor / outdoor tracking). A server-side date correction alone is not enough here, because Sprite location-history (contrail) data is tied to the original timestamp. Teldio has developed updated Sprite firmware that corrects the timestamp while preserving contrail history. Applying it requires re-programming all affected radios with the new firmware, which Teldio will help you plan and carry out.
Motorola’s permanent fix (expected July 2026)
Motorola is releasing a firmware update that resolves the issue at the radio level. According to Technical Notification MTN-0098-26:
- Currently shipping models. Addressed in the M2026.01 firmware release, expected July 2026.
- Discontinued / out-of-support models. This covers most of the legacy radios affected by this issue. A fix (S2021.01) is being made available to apply through your radio dealer. Depending on a radio’s current software version, additional upgrade steps or licensing may apply.
Because the applicable models and timing vary, refer to MTN-0098-26 or your radio dealer to confirm what applies to your specific radios. We recommend applying Motorola’s firmware fix once it is available for your model, as the permanent resolution. Until then — and for any radios that remain on legacy hardware — the Teldio workaround keeps your fleet visible and reporting correctly.
