RTLS Indoor & Outdoor Positioning System is a software application that utilizes both Bluetooth technology and standard GPS to monitor and track the location of employees throughout corporate facilities and compounds. Bluetooth beacons are strategically placed throughout indoor facilities, while GPS geo-fencing is used to monitor outdoor areas.

By combining these two technologies, staff can be safeguarded no matter where they are located. Should a worker be in distress, RTLS can be used in conjunction with ACS to receive & dispatch personal safety alarms to response teams (including the last known location of the worker).

Indoor & Outdoor Positioning with GIPS

RTLS Indoor & Outdoor Positioning solution allows organizations to locate and track employees in real-time using Bluetooth technology indoors and standard GPS for the outdoors. RTLS can be installed in multiple configurations to allow for different tracking and monitoring options for different industries and settings.

Indoor-Monitoring
Bluetooth Indoor Positioning

The indoor positioning system can locate and track employees indoors through any always discoverable Bluetooth device registered in its database. Beacons can be placed throughout the whole building, on every floor, at entrances/exits, or in predetermined critical or safe areas to determine location. As a synced Bluetooth device pairs and unpairs with beacons at known locations, RTLS shows the users’ movements.

Outdoor-Monitoring
GPS Outdoor Positioning

The outdoor portion of RTLS locates and tracks employees via their GPS-enabled MOTOTRBO™ radios. Outdoor areas which require monitoring are configured using GPS geo-fences. The two-way radio regularly transmits its current position using GPS satellites and passes on the information to RTLS via the MOTOTRBO™ Radio Network. The user’s location is displayed on the RTLS user interface.

By combining these two technologies, staff can be safeguarded whether they are indoors or outdoors. Using the web browser, an employee’s location can be easily be found and monitored in real-time. When used in conjunction with ACS, MDN and CLW, response teams are automatically notified of the location of the distressed employee via radio text, SMS text or email.

RTLS can be installed in multiple configurations to allow for different tracking and monitoring options indoors.

Comprehensive Positioning

RTLS can be used to track all employee movements throughout a facility. As a synced Bluetooth device pairs and un-pairs at known locations, RTLS displays the users last known location. By consulting the desktop interface, employee location records can easily be found and monitored.

When RTLS  is coupled with the Alarm Control System (ACS), the solution enables employees to quickly notify supervisors of emergencies by pressing a panic button on their mobile device. A message is then sent to the appropriate response team with the employee’s alarm notification and his last known location.

RTLS can be used to monitor the ins and outs at targeted entrance and exit points. Bluetooth beacons are placed in doorways and hallways to create zones that enable the movement of personnel and/or assets to be tracked automatically.

RTLS can also be coupled with the Alarm Control System (ACS) to trigger alarm notifications if employees or assets enter or leave certain zones. By doing so, alarm notification messages are automatically sent to specific individuals to inform them of the situation at hand.

Critical and Safe Area Protection

RTLS can be used to create critical or safe areas indoors. When an employee enters a designated critical zone, RTLS automatically activates the Centralized Lone Worker (CLW) application to ensure their safety and well-being. Safe areas work in the opposite way, as CLW is automatically turned off when an employee enters a designated safe zone, for example the cafeteria or break room.

RTLS tracks when a user enters or exits these zones. The two-way radio regularly transmits its current position using GPS satellites and passes on the information to RTLS via the MOTOTRBO™ Radio Network. RTLS displays the user’s location in and outside of the pre-defined zones.

By combining Bluetooth and GPS technology staff can be located from any position in or around the facility. When leaving a bluetooth area and going outdoors, the MOTOTRBO™ radio seamlessly switches from pairing and un-pairing with Bluetooth beacons to GPS monitoring.

Administrators and dispatchers can quickly locate staff or important assets on an easy-to-use interface. Whether users are indoors or outdoors, their location can be quickly be identified on the large overview display. When users are indoors, administrators can view their location on the detailed floor plan, or see their position through Open Street Maps, should they go outdoors.

System Architecture

RTLS is a software application installed on an on-site server to track the location of Bluetooth and GPS-enabled MOTOTRBO™ radios. Leveraging the company’s private radio network, RTLS tracks radio users in real-time and shares location data with mobile workers via data messages or pre-canned audio messages. The location information is displayed on a desktop application accessible over the LAN, with which administrators, supervisors and dispatchers have visual data of employee and asset locations.

What devices are compatible with RTLS?

For the indoors, RTLS can detect any Bluetooth-enabled device that remains in always discoverable mode.
